Join our pilot project to take our award winning Street Law programme into Scottish prisons. We're looking for solicitors in the Aberdeenshire area to take part in a four week programme, in collaboration with Project Turnkey, after attending a mandatory training weekend at which we will equip you with the skills you need.

This is an initial training session to prepare you for a four week programme taking place at HMP Grampian on the following dates:  Wednesday 26 June, Wednesday 3 July, Wednesday 10 July and Wednesday 17 July 2019

What is Street Law

Street Law is an outreach initiative introduced to Scottish high schools in 2014.  Our trainers are law students currently studying the LLB / DPLP who sign up to become involved on a voluntary basis.  Street Law trainers teach classes, traditionally in low progression schools, about the law and legal process whilst providing knowledge and skills that school pupils can use to recognise, prevent and (in some cases) resolve legal problems.  The aim of Street Law is to raise aspirations of the school pupils by providing information about the law, in an engaging and participatory manner, to encourage a career in the legal profession.

Street Law in the Community and Project Turnkey

Street Law in the Community is a joint initiative with Project Turnkey which places Scottish solicitors in a prison setting to teach about law.

Like our schools programme, Street Law in the Community aims to promote legal literacy, equality and access to law while also teaching high cognitive and social skills to enhance a participant’s effectiveness in legal matters.

We will provide a bespoke training programme incorporating best practice in public legal education and the internationally recognised methodologies of Street Law to provide you with an exciting opportunity to make an impact on individuals and the communities around Aberdeenshire.

In order to attend the training, you must be available and willing to attend HMP Grampian to facilitate lessons for 4 consecutive weeks from Wednesday 26 June.

Project Turnkey provides a service for people who have been involved in prostitution, or who are at risk of becoming involved, and wish to change the course of their lives.

Founded by Erika Grant, at the time an undergraduate at the University of Aberdeen (now a graduate of LLB Law and the postgraduate Diploma in Professional Legal Practice), Project TurnKey is the result of three years of development of partnerships, networks, and collaborations.

In that period, working relationships have been established with 15 other organisations and public bodies, and the Project and its founder have won multiple awards.

The project is staffed by four dedicated law student volunteers who deliver a 10 week programme of workshops alongside Erika.

In their most recent programme in HMP & YOI Grampian, Project Turnkey recorded 117 attendees, of whom 14 were repeat attendees, meanting that overall, the project engaged with 103 women in one programme alone.

Who can apply?

We're looking for friendly, empathetic members who would like to use their knowledge, communciation and interpretation skills to provide access to social justice and help vulnerable women make the most of their opportunities when they leave prison.

If you are a qualified solicitor or Advocate in the Aberdeenshire area please register your interest below.  Any experience of volunteering with vulnerable people would be desirable.

In the event that the training is over-subscribed, we may follow up your registration with a telephone interview.

Where will I deliver lessons?

Trainers will attend HMP Grampian to work with vulnerable women raising their awareness and understanding of the law in areas such as human rights, family law, employment law and housing law providing confidence to move beyond barriers from their pasts.
