Mark is a director, mentor and coach who has had a wide and varied career, including as a retail manager, change management consultant and leading various business functions for a major multinational company.

He is an associate lecturer with Dundee Business School and since 2012 a business partner in Blue Ptarmigan and a business mentor and coach with the Princes Trust. 

Mark has extensive experience in the design and delivery of people based ‘performance improvement interventions’ for SME’s, large corporations and public sector bodies.

    Registration and refreshments
  • Participants will be able to introduce themselves, their background why they are attending and what they want to get out of the day.

    • How to use the ‘skill, will & focus model’ to diagnose the root cause of performance issues and/or set people up for success
    • How T-STAR Conversations can maximise the probability of delivery
    • Share the five steps to having robust dialogues and great delivery conversations
    • The impact of vocal elements and body language on effective communication

    The session will explore how to get the best out of your people and how to manage the performance of poorer performing team members and better set up your good performers for success.

    Models and best practice frameworks will be explained and discussed using real life examples. Thereafter, the participants will be broken into small groups to work through various scenarios.

  • 11:30 - 11:45

    Refreshments break
    • What makes a conversation difficult
    • How to best structure a difficult conversation
    • Understand how to manage the emotions of a difficult conversation

    The session will explore the three stages to mastering a difficult conversation and how to develop your active listening and good questioning techniques, which are key to handling difficult conversations.

    Participants will form into smaller groups to explore different scenarios to develop their approach to difficult conversations.

  • 12:30 - 13:00

    Lunch and refreshments
    • Strategies for managing conflict in the workplace
    • How to apply these strategies on a day-to-day basis
    • Improved understanding of how conflict impacts team and organisational performance.
    • How to better manage attitude towards workplace conflict

    A combination of theory and real life stories will be used to demonstrate that we all experience day to day conflict and that it cannot be avoided.

    Participants will be asked to explore how their attitude towards conflict impacts on how the situation is handled.

    • Greater understanding of the different impacts that the various management styles have
    • The benefits of having an easily articulated organisational core purpose
    • How to effectively use the two minute feedback model to drive ownership and accountability

    We will explore: ‘How do I create the capacity, capability and desire in my team to deliver more?’; ‘When to tell and direct and when to coach and empower?’; ‘How do you tap into an employee’s discretionary effort, get them to go the extra mile and really make a difference to your business?’

    All these questions will be explored and addressed as part of an interactive session blending theory with practical day-to-day examples and participant contributions.

    Refreshments break
    • Understand the Emotional Cycle of Change and employees reactions to change
    • How to use the Change Management Iceberg to effectively implement change
    • Five steps for dealing with resistance
    • The role of ambassadors in influencing a team’s reaction to change

    ‘How do I effectively implement change and new ways of working while continuing to deliver operationally?’ ‘How best to deal with resistance to change?’

    These questions and more will be explored and addressed as part of an interactive session blending management theory with practical day-to-day examples.

    • Answer/ cover any outstanding questions or expectations
    • For people to share their key learnings and what they will do next
    • Gain feedback on the workshop

    Round table discussion regarding what each participant will either start/stop or continue to do as a result of the workshop.
