Scam emails claiming to be from "Law Society" are only the latest in a series of recent attempted frauds on solicitors

The Society has been informed of scam emails claiming to be from “Law Society” sent out to solicitors and law firms with PDF downloads.

The emails have the subject line “Important Information”, and claim that the Society has been trying to reach the recipient urgently and ask them to review an attachment. The “from” email address is not a Law Society of Scotland email address.

Solicitors are reminded of the Society’s Cybersecurity Guide (www.lawscot.org.uk), which includes tips on what to think about before opening emails and attachments. Do not click the link to download the attachment on these emails.

If you suspect a fraud, or other internet crime, remember to report it to www.actionfraud.police.uk

Where a fraud or scam has actually taken place, it should be reported directly to Police Scotland.

Last month the Society warned that Scottish law firms have recently been targeted by a redemption statement scam when acting in sale or remortgage transactions, involving apparently genuine statements but containing falsified bank account details; and of emails received from two fake law firms.
