“Counter-cyclical” is the term often applied to the insolvency and corporate restructuring sector. Perhaps less prominent during good times, the expertise of those who deal with businesses in difficulties inevitably becomes more in demand when the economy is struggling.
Readers of this feature will find all aspects of post-insolvency business disposal well covered in the profiles submitted. But it is far from the case that a situation of financial trouble is a one-way street to business oblivion. As can be seen from the individual entries, refinancing and restructuring options feature strongly in considering the way forward for those in difficulties, at least if the company managers concerned seek help sufficiently promptly.
In addition to direct approaches to all firms known to have an interest in the field, entries for the feature were invited in two recent issues of the Journal, and we also asked those submitting entries to nominate others in the sector whose work they respect. We hope that this has resulted in a fair picture of the leading players in this practice area.
With the short-term outlook gloomy for much of the retail sector, and the public spending squeeze hitting a wide range of other commercial interests, it is important that the need to take early advice in order to maximise the prospects for survival and recovery in case of trouble is clearly understood across the business community.
