Employers regularly say their in-house lawyers are 'risk managers'. However, few solicitors receive any formal guidance, let alone training, in risk management. In a world dominated by constantly increasing law and regulation, shifting political landscapes, complex corporate structures/deals and where social media can damage your organisation’s reputation in hours, you must be able to understand 'risk'. By understanding ’risk’ you will be better able to advise your employers about controlling and mitigating it in a structured, proportionate and appropriate way.

This event will help in-house lawyers create a structure they can apply to their work regardless of the organisation they work for.

It answers fundamental questions – How do you identify the key risks? What is the difference between 'risk appetite' and ‘risk tolerance’? How do you balance your advice against your employer’s appetite for risk?

From November 2018, all solicitors practising in Scotland are required to complete one hour of mandatory risk management CPD as part of the 20 hours minimum.

To mark the new requirements, we are delighted to offer free risk management training to in-house members.

We recognise that an in-house solicitor’s role is often closely tied to managing risk for their employer, whether by proactively identifying possible risks or mitigating the impact of unavoidable risk factors. Given this broad remit, many in-house solicitors will already be doing CPD that relates to risk management as a matter of course.

It is up to you to determine what is appropriate risk management CPD for your role and organisation and this may be fulfilled by in-house training or self-study. The following are examples of areas that may constitute risk management CPD: GDPR; cybersecurity; sector specific regulatory or compliance obligations; privilege; health & safety obligations of your employer; professional ethics; and company secretarial matters.

  • Learn the language of “Risk” - explore key risk terminology and how you define legal risk
  • Consider how you create a successful legal risk management strategy
  • Understand your organisation’s risk appetite
  • Look at some of the tools available to the in-house lawyer to achieve good risk management
  • How in-house lawyers can add value to their employers through successful managing risk
